Crispus Attucks Middle School️
History & Legacy
Founded in 1958 at 4330 Bellfort Street in Houston’s Sunnyside community, Crispus Attucks Middle School was named to honor Crispus Attucks, a pivotal figure in American history. Born into slavery around 1723, Attucks escaped bondage, became a whaler, and emerged as an outspoken leader among colonists protesting British rule. He was the first person killed in the Boston Massacre of 1770, solidifying his place as a symbol of resilience and resistance against oppression.
From its inception, Attucks Middle School has stood as a beacon for educational opportunity in Sunnyside, serving generations of predominantly Black and Hispanic students. The school embodies its namesake’s spirit through its rigorous STEAM curriculum and commitment to cultivating future college-bound professionals: as the school's creed reads—“I am Attucks Middle School… I believe I am college bound”—illustrates, academic perseverance, leadership, and accountability as core values.
Over the decades, Attucks has thoughtfully adapted to changing educational requirements while maintaining deep ties to its local roots. As Houston ISD continues to honor African American heritage, Attucks’ establishment in Sunnyside remains central to celebrating and uplifting the community through culturally responsive education.
Today, Crispus Attucks Middle School stands as a proud testament to its historic namesake and its founding purpose—preparing students not only for academic success but for lives of leadership, resilience, and contribution to both local and global communities.
